ISSN 0001-5555 Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a severe episodic mucocutaneous reaction due largely to ingested drugs and/or occasionally to infections. TEN presents as sheets of erythema, necrosis and bullous detachment of the epidermis, with a mortality rate of 30–35% (1). The most commonly implicated drugs are sulphonamides, chlormezanone, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, imidazole antifungals, cephalosporins, anticonvulsants, and allopurinol (2). In contrast, fluoroquinolones, broad-spectrum bactericidal agents, rarely cause severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) such as TEN and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). To date, a total of 31 cases of SJS or TEN in which a fluoroquinolone was the offending agent have been reported. Of these, 26 were caused by ciprofloxacin (3), whereas only one was caused by ofloxacin (4). We describe here a patient with TEN induced by ingestion of oral ofloxacin.

Levofloxacin-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis treated with intravenous immunoglobulin.

Dear Editor, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) is a rare, fulminating rash with a mortality rate of 35%.1 It is predominantly medication-induced; allopurinol, ampicillins, anticonvulsants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly implicated. Fluoroquinolones are widely used, have a broad coverage and have a low incidence of serious adverse effects. Levofloxacin, a L-racemic isomer o...

Reactivation of Cytomegalovirus in a Patient with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome-Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are severe adverse cutaneous reactions to drugs. We describe the case of a 19 year old patient with SJS/TEN overlap syndrome, who developed severe interstitial pneumonia after she had received antiepileptic drugs. A cytomegalovirus infection was diagnosed by Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) detection on Bronchoalveo...

Causes and treatments of Stevens - Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in Iranian patients

Aims: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are serious severe cutaneous adverse reactions with high mortality and morbidity induced by medications. In this cross sectional study, we investigated, suspected drugs, and potential treatments of SJS/TEN. Methods: A cross- sectional descriptive study was conducted on 60 patients admitted with a diagnosis of Stevens-Jo...

Fluconazole induced toxic epidermal necrolysis: a case report

Drug induced toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens Johnson syndrome are more commonly associated with medications such as sulfonamides, penicillin, anticonvulsants, oxicam non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, allopurinol and corticosteroids. Isolated instances secondary to drugs outside of the aforementioned classes have also been reported. We report a case of probable toxic epidermal necrol...

Acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis and toxic epidermal necrolysis induced by carbamazepine.

Acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (toxic epidermal necrolysis spectrum of severe cutaneous drug reactions) are believed to have distinct underlying pathophysiologies. Our patient, a 28-year-old Chinese woman, represents the first known reported case of clinically-consistent and histologically-proven acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis and toxic epide...
